“Arts & Crafts”: Busywork or Enhanced Learning?

I had the opportunity to write for Edweek once again. This time exploring how hands-on activities can be an integral part of learning rather than “fluff.” Spoiler alert: PBL is a great way to integrate arts into your classroom with a purpose!

Arts and crafts can be a purposeful part of learning. They grant freedom of expression and offer an alternative way to demonstrate student knowledge than standardized assessments. Coloring or drawing can be filler activities with no educational value. Or they could be used as sketchnoting for visual notes or summaries of content. Students could collaboratively create concept maps demonstrating learning connections. The question for teachers to consider is how will the art or crafts be tied to learning goals?

Pulse of PBL

Arts & Crafts with Purpose

A couple of weeks ago I was a part of a short podcast, A Quick Primer: Using Arts and Crafts to Achieve Student Learning Objectives More Effectively, on Bam! Radio with Larry Ferlazzo. We discussed examples of when art is a key part of the learning vs. when it is merely fluffy time filler.

One of the examples that I shared (one of my favorites) is how Justin Wells used art as scaffolding for a literary analysis of Dante’s Inferno. The art and presentation of it prepared students to write an in-depth critique of the article. Below is a short video of this incredible project.

The podcast was short so I did not get the opportunity to share other examples, but I believe that various forms of art are perfect final products in PBL.
