The Power of Making Thinking Visible Online

This month I have had the pleasure of participating in a virtual book club hosted by Myla Lee and Telannia Norfar. They did a great job modeling some of the routines in the book The Power of Making Thinking Visible by Ron Ritchhart and Mark Church. Definitely a 5 out of 5 stars book that you need to read!

One of my goals during this book study was to think about how these excellent protocols could be used for remote online learning. While discussing in my small group with Katie Huang and Shalini Heintz, I realized that many of the routines could be done through Google Doc templates, particularly the routines for engaging with ideas.

So I whipped up some templates in both Google Docs and Slides to be used with classes. Ideally one would teach the routines in face-to-face settings first. Once students are familiar with the routine, they should easily transfer to the online environment. You also could print these out for in person classes.

Another way to use these protocols online, especially the routines for engaging with others, is some specific tech tools. For synchronous use, I would use Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, or Microsoft Teams to run the protocols. For asynchronous use, try out Flipgrid or to a lesser degree Padlet.

I am not going to explain how to use any of these routines because you should buy the book! I highly recommend it as both practical and integrating perfectly with both SEL and PBL.

Here is a link to gain access to all 29 of my templates. I received permission from Ron Ritchhart to share these. Please respect their work by never selling them in any form!
